Lions Quest is a Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) programme which has been used by educators in more than 105 countries and geographical areas around the world. It has ‘Early Intervention Foundation Level 3 rating

Social and emotional skills provide the foundation for dealing with anger and frustration, preventing negative behaviours and developing positive school behaviours that increase academic performance.

Skills for Growing for 5 to 10 year olds and Skills for Adolescence for 11 to 14 year olds are comprehensive positive youth development and prevention programmes. Both programmes bring together families and carers, educators and community members to help children and young people develop life and citizenship skills within a safe, caring and consistent environment.

The programmes teach skills in the following four main areas

  • self-discipline

  • responsibility

  • good judgement

  • respect for others.

To achieve the aims of the programme, the following elements are integral to the overall success:

  • classroom curriculum

  • service-learning

  • positive school climate

  • family and community involvement.

Skills for Action for 15 to 19 year olds is an innovative and flexible curriculum which moves beyond the classroom to foster civic responsibility and build essential social, emotional, academic and workplace skills. In Skills for Action, students develop the means to resist negative peer pressure, make healthy choices and understand and appreciate diversity in the classroom.

For all three programmes the classroom curriculum consists of six core thematic units

which are:

  • a positive learning community

  • personal development

  • social development

  • health and prevention

  • leadership and service

  • reflection and closure.

The lessons in each of these six units include grade appropriate content that develops sequentially by topic. These units support skill building in each of the five social and emotional learning core competencies:

  • self-awareness

  • self-management

  • social awareness

  • relationship skills

  • responsible decision making.

Lessons on service learning and drug, alcohol, tobacco and violence prevention are also integrated into these core thematic units.
